MMA Workouts : Marcedes Lewis

I’ve been monitoring the MMA Workouts of  Marcedes Lewis of the Jacksonville Jaguars because I love the Jags.  I was hoping that he would be ready to take over the core receiving responsibilities from his Tight End position because he is so athletic.

Well for the first time this offseason I heard a couple of talking heads on ESPN wondering the same thing.  They both felt that the idea of having a #1 receiver with Marcedes on the team should be a lower priority for next season.  They feel that Marcedes has the skill and athletic ability to catch the most balls for the Jags this season and that would be bad news for opposing secondaries because Lewis is 6’6″ 255lbs.  A nightmare.

Next, a twitter follower of Jay Glazer, who happens to be doing MMA Workouts with several NFL Players this offseason including Clay Matthews, shawne merriman, Jarrad Page and Kirk Morrison, asked which one of these guys would be the most ready to fight in a real professional contest.  Without hesitation Glazer said Lewis.

MMA Workouts have become a phenomenal way for not only the NFL Players to stay in shape during the Lockout, but a way to learn new skills that will translate to field and give them a competitive advantage of other players who have not stepped up their training.  MMA Workouts are not for the faint of heart in general and some of the NFL toughest guys look like fools when they hit the cage on day 1 but those who really have desire to get better are able to hang on.

Each athlete Glazer is training this season has commented away from the gym that the workouts are intense and like nothing they have ever done in preparation for football.  They all agree that the training is completely different regarding weight training, mental focus and body transformation.  Each position requires different skills to be effective on the field and Jay Glazer shows each guy how to dominate their positions with MMA Skills.

For Example,  Running Backs need to hit the holes hard and with their knees coming up high.  Glazer works on kicks and exercises that develop the hips.  Lineman need leverage, the ability twist and knock the hands of the opposing lineman away.  Glazer has drills for all which not only push the players bast their breaking point physically, they give them real fighting moves to punish the opposition for 4 quarters.   This training is new to the NFL and will clearly create a situation where guys who have jumped on the bandwagon might look a little slow and frail on week 1.

So as one of Glazer’s prize pupils in their MMA Workouts, Marcedes Lewis appears to be the most fit Tight End going into 2011 and watching his MMA Workouts shows clear improvement in how he controls his body.  He is going punish people who try and bring him down and I believe he will have tons of YAC yards this season.  Can’t Wait Marcedes!
